Marketing & Sales came out emphatic winners, 24-11, against a tricky and tough Ops team to earn the first victory of the new season. Although the scoreline did not reflect the hugely competitive and high standard on show, Ops will surely want to put this defeat behind them in the next game.
The match began as a cagey affair until Tony Rothwell, recently back from a serious back injury, opened the scoring. Receiving the ball on the right flank, Rothwell opened up his body to beautifully curl the ball with his left peg into the far corner of the net. As quality goes, that was up there!
The match swung back and forth and remained close right up till halftime as the teams went into the break with M&S 7-4 to the good. As the second half commenced, players began to tire and the game started to open up. This led to more and more opportunities. In particular for M&S, and Tom Smart, who really shone with his Peter Crouch-esk finishing.
M&S then ran away with the game, despite a shaky start, to come out 24-11 winners. That did not stop the Ops star, Patrick Gaúl, to pick up the man of the match performance for his brilliant trickery and finesse. A great start to the new season!

– for an incredible Croyff turn, only to fully fluff the shot in the completely wrong direction.
